The "Tulip-like" form was used constantly by Pennsylvania German artisans-almost to the exclusion of all other floral designs-this suggests a deeper reason for its dominance in their art. Many German colonists were guided by mystical forms of religious belief, and in the mystical approach to religion, the tulip stands for the lily: a symbol of man's search for God, and a promise of bliss in Paradise.
